This is the second part of the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ blog entry with details about the service offering, features and functions, migration strategy to move workloads into the environment, and more interesting things that IBM is planning to add in the near future. See also Part 1.
To build their cloud environment, customers connect by using Internet or VPN dedicated link to access a service catalog on the Enterprise+ portal. This is done in an easy-to-use four-step process, as shown in the figure and example:
Virtual machine capacity options include preconfigured small, medium, large, extra large, and jumbo bundles of CPU, memory, and block storage on IBM System p and System x hardware platforms. Additional increments of CPU, memory, and storage can be added after the virtual machine instance is activated.
Multiple service categories, such as bronze, silver, gold, and platinum, offer service level agreements (SLAs) ranging from 98.5 to 99.9% for virtual machine availability.
Software image portfolio offers IBM AIX 6.x, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.x, and Windows 2003 and 2008 operating systems, along with middleware and database images for IBM WebSphere Application Server, WebSphere MQ, DB2, Oracle, Microsoft SQL server, WebLogic, Apache Tomcat, and others.
Base managed service includes ITIL v3 processes such as service request, incident, problem, change, event, asset, and configuration management. Optionally other services such as middleware/database monitoring can be added on top as custom services.
In addition, the following features and functions provide enhanced systems management to the customer’s private cloud environment
- Security compliance and management ensuring OS and middleware/database images, which are deployed, hardened, and maintained using a predefined security control policy
- Redundant 10 Gbps VPN over Internet or a dedicated circuit provides customer-premises connectivity
- Private cloud, which can be deployed either as a shared or dedicated model on IBM cloud premises
- Network intrusion protection and vulnerability scanning of management infrastructure
- Network segmentation using secure VLANs and load balancing of customer workloads
- Resilient block storage provisioned as part of initial capacity bundle and future incremental-add
- Various backup and restore options including daily and ad-hoc backups
- Business continuity and disaster recovery as an optional service
A future roadmap also includes bringing in proven IBM System z and System i platforms onto the cloud along with IBM AIX 7, SUSE Linux, Microsoft Exchange, and low-cost tiered storage options.
Migrating workloads to SmartCloud Enterprise + is made easy with IBM’s proven expertise successfully migrating 100’s of customers for strategic outsourcing engagements. The following picture shows the four-step wave approach IBM follows to move production workloads to the cloud.
In alignment with IBM Cloud Computing Reference Architecture, SmartCloud Enterprise+ provides the foundation for other IBM cloud services such as platform as a service (PaaS), software as a service (SaaS), and business process as a service (BPaaS).
In summary, IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ differentiates in addressing key enterprise customer requirements in the areas of security, managed services, migration of workloads, and efficient operational support for mission-critical production workloads. The governance, open standards-based approach, and years of service-delivery best practices extended to cloud delivery model highlight the SmartCloud Enterprise+ offering among the competition.
