Cloud computing has the chance to radically change whole sectors of the economy and even lead to new market segments. For this to happen, corporate users of cloud computing using private, public or hybrid cloud models should adjust their structures and methods of operation to a new way of processing. These changes include IT transformation, structures and company business processes, and even working methods adopted in the organization.
IT Transformation. One of the primary challenges faced by CIOs starting their company’s cloud computing is the need to fit new platforms into already deployed infrastructure in a company and its often radical simplification. This implies modification of strategies, processes and structures of IT departments and even changes the nature of the activities undertaken by the vertical transfer of technology and the burden of reactive actions aimed at maintaining the system and equipment, and proactive actions aimed at the best adaptation of systems to business needs. As a result, the introduction of cloud computing in a business indicates the need for standardization of the most important processes with the administration of hardware platforms, as well as planning policy and changes in corporate management architecture. In many cases, this also means the implementation of more precise methods of monitoring the implementation of the IT services specific to new types of services involving providing access to computing power (processors, memory resources) on request.
Matching structures and processing business. Today, no one has doubt that the implementation of large-scale cloud computing brings many benefits in not only a technological but also a business sense. Perhaps the greatest of them is at least a partial lifting of barriers to access the latest technological solutions for corporate IT users. Until recently, the realization of almost any business project entailed the need to plan investment in hardware and software, as well as agreeing with the IT specialists scheduling tools to support implementation of the planned project.
Cloud computing allows for partial limitation of this process, as well as reduction in spending on IT needs the implementation of business projects. You can replace the least supportive services available through the clouds private or public. To take advantage of these new capabilities, staff business units should have at least a general knowledge of solutions and services available in the cloud computing model and in many cases take on the role of analysts and solution architects. This implies the need for modification of many business processes, and increased flexible organizational structures to facilitate collaboration and sourcing knowledge from different areas in the organization.
Change in personnel. Increased flexibility at the level of structures should go hand in hand with increased autonomy of employees. At least a partial lifting of barriers to access modern IT tools can be a stimulus to innovative staff. But for this to happen, they need to have the opportunity to complement their instruments — the IT tools available in the cloud computing model. In practice, it is a complete revolution, which began in many companies on the occasion of the emergence of Web 2.0. The future was said to be cloud until recently. In discussions about cloud computing I quite commonly heard voices saying that processing in the cloud is fictional and an attempt to package the old-concept data processing known since the days of mainframe computers in new robes. For two to three years we have seen, however, a new attitude towards this type of solution. More and more managers have begun to believe that in the near future companies will get rid of much of the ICT infrastructure, and your information will be kept and processed through a centralized internal platform (private cloud) and external (public cloud).
In my opinion cloud computing is not too distant of a future – to some extent it’s the reality already. Soon, all of us will carry a device guaranteeing access to information, private data, applications and thanks to open standards, get access to it everywhere through each device connected to the Internet. We should start today to prepare the structure of companies in which we are working on this challenge.
