A complete guide to the OpenStack Havana release


OpenStack recently announced a new release of its cloud operating system named Havana. It brings new capabilities that enhance the open source cloud experience and elevate it more and more to an enterprise level. I would like to point out some of the new capabilities and enhancements that I feel are important when deciding to deploy a cloud infrastructure.

Havana - OpenStackThe first new functionality named Heat brings the capability to deploy composite applications. This is something that is already deployed in IBM PureApplication System and IBM SmartCloud Orchestrator.  Through a template file, we can define the components, relationships and resources needed to deploy an application composed by a web and a database server, for instance. Additional automation and configuration can also be executed as part of the provisioning process.

Another new functionality that is very important not only in a cloud environment, but also in any IT infrastructure, is the capability to monitor and provide metering and chargeback services. It is being released through Ceilometer, a shared service Openstack component that spans the three pillars of compute, storage and networking.  It collects measurement data from cloud and enables it for metering and monitoring.

There is also the new dashboard named Horizon that integrates the Heat capabilities and provides a better user experience. Ceilometer is also integrated into Havana, enabling the user to query the usage and health of the cloud.  In addition to that, new features from Openstack compute (Nova) were integrated,such as password reset, quota default edition and instance resizing. From Openstack networking (Neutron) it enables an editable and interactive network topology visualization, allowing a better way to construct Software Defined Networks.

Other additional features in Havana that will enable more adoption are global cluster support for object storage (Swift) and new networking (Neutron) capabilities named VPN as a service and Firewall as a service and the update of  the load balancing service.

In November 2013, the Openstack Summit provided a way to watch the cloud adoption session where the presenter gave a good  picture of cloud adoption and OpenStack analysis.
