There many cloud solutions out there. Some are actually cloud, while others are just computers with virtualization or automatic provisioning. There are also solutions like software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). Each solution has its good and bad points, so the question is: What is the right cloud for you?
IBM has several good options in cloud solutions. Each was developed to support different necessities for customer needs.
This is a new acquisition of IBM. SoftLayer is one of the top three biggest cloud solution companies in the world with more than 21.000 customers and 100.000 devices. SoftLayer provides IaaS or in other words, unmanaged virtual machines. So, if you want to have your workload running on cloud but keep the IT support team on-premises, SoftLayer is a great option for you.
IBM SmartCloud Enterprise+ (SCE+)
SCE+ was created to support enterprise customers that are looking for cloud solutions with infrastructure and operations support for instances (virtual machines). This solution is also an IaaS, but also includes operating system support, monitoring and backup. In some cases it can also include database (DB) monitoring and backup with additional costs.
IBM Smart Cloud for SAP Application (SC4SAP)
SC4SAP is a PaaS solution. In other words, it includes all the infrastructure support (hardware) and application support (SAP, database and operating system support). It also includes monitoring and backup for these instances. This cloud solution supports almost all SAP system types and versions, and the good thing about this solution is that all support is executed by the same integrated team (OS, DB and SAP support teams). This is good because of the complexity and integration of these kind of systems. Remember that in this cloud solution, the customer must bring their own license (BYOL).
IBM SmartCloud for Oracle Application (SC4Oracle)
The SC4Oracle solution is also a PaaS solution and includes all the infrastructure support (hardware) and application support (Oracle applications, database and operational system support). The solution also requires you to bring your own license (BYOL) and is compatible with almost all Oracle solutions like Fusion, eBusiness, JD Edwards, Peoplesoft and Siebel.
There is much more where these came from, including SaaS for BPM, procurement, analytics and more.
