Cloud adoption among organizations is growing, and many are looking to maximize their cloud environments and investments by working with a third party cloud vendor. One of the main concerns in this process (and rightly so) is having sufficient safeguards in place to prevent sharing sensitive corporate data outside the firewall.
During this month’s #cloudchat, we want to examine the role of the organization versus the role of the cloud service provider across the entire cloud lifecycle. Particularly, we will discuss what questions should you ask your cloud provider when it comes to service level agreements (SLAs) and roles and responsibilities with regard to your data.

Steven Woodward is CEO of Cloud Perspectives, located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, with international specialists in Australia, Austria, USA, Italy, Spain and Brazil. He is a member and metrics co-lead of the National Institute of Standards for Technology (NIST) cloud computing working groups (under the US Department of Commerce). He is an International Telecommunication Union expert (Cloud Focus Group and Joint Collaboration Activity member) in conjunction with the United Nations helping define and align cloud computing telecommunication models. He is a metrics subject leader with the Cloud Standards Customer Council and associate with the TM Forum where he is helping define cloud metrics in conjunction with the help of the international software measurement community. He is a frequent international speaker and instructor on cloud computing and good ICT governance.

Gurpreet is the Vice-President of Product Development & Marketing at Ekartha Inc. At Ekartha he leads the product development & management of Ekartha’s Alice SaaS platform. He is also responsible along with the CEO for managing Ekartha’s SaaS and Cloud consulting business. Prior to that, he acted as Interim Vice-President of Product Management & Strategy for Searchmyloan Inc.(www.searchmyloan.com), where he helped guide the company’s product strategy and marketing. Gurpreet is an active cloud evangelist. He is active in cloud standards bodies, and is a contributing author for multiple practical guides developed by the Cloud Standards Customer Council (CSCC). He is also chairperson of Cloud Computing and SaaS Special Interest Group for Listnet, www.listnet.org.
Ryan Berg

Ryan Berg leads the cloud computing strategy for IBM’s Security Systems division. Prior to joining IBM in 2009, Ryan was the Co-Founder and Chief Scientist for Ounce Labs. He holds patents and has patents pending in multi-language security assessment techniques, kernel-level security, and secure remote communication protocols. Prior to Ounce, Ryan co-founded Qiave Technologies, a pioneer in kernel-level security, which later sold to WatchGuard Technologies in October of 2000. In the late 1990’s, Ryan also designed and developed the infrastructure for GTE Internetworking/Genuity’s appliance-based managed firewall and security services.

John is a senior member of the IBM Software Group Strategy and Technology team where he focuses on standards efforts for IBM’s cloud initiatives. He is IBM’s representative on the steering committee of the Cloud Standards Customer Council. Before his standards work, John spent several years developing the IBM Software Group open source strategy, working with both customers and industry consultants to communicate and refine the strategy. He also spent several years in the Software Group Strategy organization, where he contributed to the formulation of the initial IBM web application server strategy, leading to the eventual launch of the IBM WebSphere product family.
