The goal of IBM SmartCloud Application Services is to provide end-to-end services for applications— from the development to production. It consists of five areas shown in the following figure.

Currently, in the pilot version of the IBM SmartCloud Application Services, two main services are implemented, which cover the application lifecycle, the application environment, and part of the integration.
- IBM SmartCloud Application Collaborative Lifecycle Management Service. With this service, you can manage your application lifecycle development. It is based on Rational products such as Rational Team Concert, Rational Quality Management, and Rational Requirement Composer.
- IBM SmartCloud Application Workload Service. With this service, you can deploy topology on the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise through virtual application or system patterns.
The DevOps methodology consists of a number of use-cases to manage an application development and operations. The DevOps covers three areas — development, quality insurance, and technology operation —and it is what offers IBM SmartCloud Application Services. Adopting DevOps will provide reduced change scope, increased release coordination, and automation.
Both services are used for this DevOps scenario. For example, in Rational Application Developer, a developer tracks the “defect” managed by the IBM SmartCloud Collaborative Lifecycle Management Service, and then uses the Workload Deployer plug-in to create a test environment on the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise using the IBM SmartCloud Application Workload Service. The IBM SmartCloud Application Services provide the functionality needed for each actor of the DevOps scenario.
The IBM SmartCloud Application Services are deployed from the IBM SmartCloud Enterprise portal.

Is the concept of IBM's cloud service the same as that of Google and Apple?
Thanks for your question. IBM's platform as a service offering, SmartCloud Application Services (SCAS), offers our clients choices when it comes to application development and deployment. We realize that one size doesn't fit all when it comes to enterprise applications, so we have options that allow clients to develop and test in our public cloud and deploy privately with the IBM PureApplication System, or deploy publically via SmartCloud Enterprise (SCE), our infrastructure as a service offering. SCAS provides control, reliability, resiliency, and data security while simultaneously offering massive scalability in performance and capacity. In addition, IBM builds expertise into pre-integrated deployment patterns, which accelerate the development and delivery of new applications, eliminate manual errors, and drive consistent results. These patterns can then be deployed via public or private cloud. I hope that answers your question about the benefits of our platform as a service offering.
